How about using more deliberate lateral thinking techniques, such as
free association to a random word as a stepping stone,
reversal, and other techniques created by Edward de Bono...
Or there is the use of imagination...for instance, impersonation (pretend you're an inanimate object, a pet, etc.)
Also, many people got inspirations from deliberately putting themselves into a hypnogogic state (dreaming that happens during falling asleep) They would use something to wake themselves up so they could record their dreams. The artist Salvador Dali used to get his images from doing this deliberately holding a spoon over a plate; when he'd fall asleep, the spoon would make the sound on the place and wake him up. Many other inventor-type people tell stories of falling into sleep directly from their workbenches. It appeared that they subliminally kept working on what they were doing...managing to capture a dream, the symbolism of which contributed directly to the solution in some cases.
